The challenges LINE Securities faced.

The challenges LINE Securities faced.

UX at LINE Securities

In Japan, stocks can only be bought and sold in one unit (usually 100 shares) in normal spot trading. However, LINE Securities allows users to buy and sell stocks in “sub-unit trading,” which allows users to buy and sell only 1 share. This makes it possible for beginner investors to start investing with a small amount of money, which is differentiated from other stock services in Japan. Line Securities aims to provide a trading experience optimized for smartphones for these novice investors. As such, the trading tools are very simple and easy to use.

User needs

In its early days, LINE Securities focused on investing in domestic stocks for beginner investors. However, as the number of users grew and novice investors gained experience in stock trading, more and more users wanted a wider range of products and services. Therefore, Line Securities expanded its range of products and services to include CFD, IPO, iDeCo, and more. Service improvements have ranged from relatively low-volume updates to add new products to existing Securities to the development of a new CFD native app.

Problem-solving for LINE Securities.

Simplifying

Approach from a design perspective

With a wide range of products and services, there was the potential for the service to become somewhat complex. However, since Line Securities is targeting novice investors, care was taken to keep trading simple. The process was reviewed several times to ensure that most trades and manipulations could be resolved within 3-4 depths. The Japanese stock charts were color-coded to represent positive candles in red and negative candles in blue, so bids and asks were color-coded together. The intention is to refrain from using unnecessary colors and focus on the market situation itself.

In the case of LINE CFD, compared to LINE Securities, LINE CFD covers a wider range of products and offers multiple charts, so it was designed with a darker background color to reduce visual fatigue. However, since LINE Securities and LINE CFD are both services offered within LINE Securities, the main color was unified to ensure that all services are consistent in experience and visual appearance. However, each service was developed individually, with the main colors being varied and applied as needed to enhance the system.

In the early stages of service development, Sketch and Zeplin were mainly used as tools, but as the size of the service expanded, Figma was used to manage components and libraries from 2022 onward. As a result, members of the LINE Financial Team were able to design new features and screen designs based on the libraries.
